Best and Worst Drugstore Concealers

Happy Thursday, friends! Today I’m bringing you a best and worst list of a few of the drugstore concealers that I’ve tried. I’ve never done a post like this so be sure to let me know if it’s something you’re interested in!

Concealers aren’t really something I’m super interested in so I don’t tend to try too many out. If I find one that has good coverage, that blends well and that lasts all day then I’m happy. I had heard a ton of hype surrounding the Maybelline Age Rewind concealers so I figured I’d give them a go. I looked around at the display and picked a shade that looked like it would match me the best. For concealers, I use them mainly under my eyes so I want something that is a touch brighter than my skin with a bit of a pink undertone. I thought that the shade Light looked like the closest one to what I wanted. Now I really liked how easily it blended out and I found that it gave decent coverage for such a thin formula. However, the shade was way too yellow to the point where it looked quite strange under my eyes. I also don’t love applicators where you have to click the product up because I find it can get really gunky. Unfortunately, this guy is a pass.

You guys know that the Revlon Colorstay Foundation is my holy grail foundation, so I thought I should try the Colorstay Concealer. Now, finding shades that work for my skin can often be difficult since I am so pale, but when looking at the selection I found all of the options looked really yellow but gave 02 Light a try anyway. First off, I found this guy to end up really streaky once you start to blend it out so it’s tough to get good coverage under the eyes. On blemishes it just kind of blends away to nothing and gives nearly no coverage at all. And just as I had expected, it was super yellow on my skin.

A concealer that I do love though is the Maybelline Fit Me. I have it in the shade Fair and find it to be just pink enough to cover up the blue tones under my eyes but it also matches the rest of my skin really well. I’ve never run into any problems with creasing or fading throughout the day, so this guy is a winner in my books!

Top to bottom: Maybelline Fit Me in Light, Revlon Colorstay in 02 Light, Maybelline Instant Age Rewind in Light.

I don’t have this one anymore but I do want to mention the Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch concealers. These guys are really great highlighting concealers so if you’re looking to brighten up the under eye, or any part of the face, they’re great! They blend out super easily and are really nice and creamy.

What’s on your list for best and worst drugstore concealers? Let me know! Thank you all for hanging out today and I’ll see you on Monday!

Is it Worth the Buy? Wet n’ Wild Poster Child Palette

Happy Thursday, friends! How has your week been? A few months ago I shared a picture on Instagram of a palette from Wet n’ Wild and you were all super curious to hear my thoughts about it, so here we go!

I spotted this guy in Walmart and was instantly drawn in because of the bright colour selection. I usually go for more neutral looks but I loved the idea of having so many options all together, and since Wet n’ Wild has some of the best formulas available, you can’t go wrong!

As usual, the 8 pan palette is split into two quads. One is more on the pink/coral side and the other is more on the blue/teal side. I personally feel more comfortable using one shade as a pop along with more neutral shadows, but you do whatever you like! This is a great affordable option if you want to experiment with colour without breaking the bank.

The quality of these shadows is absolutely amazing. They are buttery and smooth and are super pigmented. I’ve used them both wet and dry and have always come out with great results. I will say that they can be a little powdery but as long as you tap off your brush and are careful, you’ll be fine. I’ll definitely be reaching for this guy if I want to add a bit of summery fun to my look now that the bitter winter is coming!

What are your favourite drugstore palettes? I’m always looking to try more! Thanks so much for stopping by today and I’ll see you all next time.

Is it Worth the Buy? Aveda Be Curly

Happy Monday everyone! Did you do anything fun this weekend? I’ve honestly been working a ton lately so I can’t wait to have some time to relax now that August is here! I have a bunch of really fun projects planned that I can’t wait to share with you all. ❤

My natural hair is super thick and curly and I never bother straightening it so I’m always looking around for products that will help it looks bouncy and smooth. I was given a really nice set for Christmas that featured four of the Aveda Be Curly products in travel size and I have been trying them out.

The shampoo and conditioner are meant to give definition to your curls while fighting frizz and adding shine. The co-wash is kind of a hybrid of these two that will cleanse your scalp while restoring moisture to your actual curls. Lastly, the curl enhancer is a way to intensify your curls, fight frizz and add a boost of shine.

I’ve really been liking what these guys add to my hair routine: After washing my hair with my usual shampoo, I rinse it about half way out and then mix a dime sized amount of the shampoo and the co-wash and wash my hair again with those. I don’t find that they make my hair feel clean enough on their own but I like them as an added boost. Then I add about a dime sized amount of the conditioner to my usual and run them through my hair from root to tip. The conditioner works nicely on it’s own but since it’s so pricey I would rather mix it and have it last longer. Then when my hair is about 50% dry, I run a small amount of the curl enhancer through. The key here is to use only a small amount because it can make your hair feel a little sticky if you over do it.

Now these guys are absolutely a splurge item for me so while I really like all of them I’ve been thinking about whether I would repurchase them in a full size. For my hair type I think that the cur enhancer makes the biggest difference and is the most worthwhile. While the other products are really nice I don’t think they do enough to justify the price–around $30 for a standard size!!

If you’re struggling to find products that work for your curly hair I’d highly recommend trying out this line! Especially if you can get it in a set like I did so you can try them all out! I’m super glad that I found these guys and will keep an eye out incase they come out with another set next Christmas! These guys are Worth the Buy for sure! Have an awesome day, friends! ❤

Is it Worth the Buy? New Brushes!

Hello friends! I hope you’re all doing well. I went to Montreal with my sister for a fun weekend of shopping to celebrate my 18th birthday. We were walking around one night and at around 1 am we came across a 24 hour Jean Coutu and couldn’t resist checking out their makeup selection.

They had a huge display showing very inexpensive brands of makeup brushes that I had never even heard of! I spotted a set of two double ended eye brushes by Personnelle and thought that for $6 it was worth a go! These brushes have wooden handles and extremely soft, synthetic bristles. The set that I got comes with an angled brow/liner brush, a fluffy small crease/blending brush, a large and a small shadow brush.

These brushes aren’t very dense so they’re not the most amazing for blending out darker colours, but I find they’re great for packing a shadow on the lid and for applying a crease shade. The fact that they’re not super dense makes it easy to not pick up too much product so you can work slower to build up the intensity.

I also picked up the Real Techniques Setting Brush. I’m a huge fan of Real Techniques because they have soft, dense brushes that are amazing quality while still being very affordable. This guy is a bit more pricey than the Personnelle brushes, at around $9, though I think it’s worth it!

This brush is tapered up into an egg shape making it a great tool to sweep powder across the skin. I like to use it on days when I want a stronger highlight, as opposed to a fan brush which gives me a softer look.

I would totally recommend checking out both of these brands next time you’re looking to try new brushes! What are your favourite drugstore brushes and makeup tools? Thanks so much for reading and have a great weekend!

Sephora Birthday Gift 2016

Hey everyone! I hope you all had a great Canada Day weekend! Every year, beauty addicts look forward to Sephora’s birthday gifts! These are little sets that VIB members can pickup for free during their birthday month. There are two options this year: a mini skincare set from Fresh and a duo from Marc Jacobs cosmetics.

The Fresh set is great for someone that’s looking to change up their skincare routine with some of their best products. You get a travel size of their Soy Face Cleanser, which is a gentle cleanser meant to remove all makeup and clean any impurities out from your skin. You also get a deluxe sample size of the hydrating and toning Rose Face Mask.

I’m always nervous about trying new skincare because of how sensitive my skin is so I thought I’d experiment with the Marc Jacobs set instead. I’ve heard a ton about this line but haven’t had the chance to try anything yet. With this kit, you get a travel size of their Highliner Gel Eye Crayon in Blaqueur and a mini Le Marc Lip Creme in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

I am honestly so in love with both of these! The eyeliner is super black and stays put all day without any fading or creasing. It also smudges out beautifully to create a more smokey look. The lipstick is super creamy and sets to a satin demi-matte finish while still feeling super comfortable on the lips. It’s a gorgeous soft pink that makes for an easy and subtle pop of colour for summer.

Which set do you think looks best? Thank you all so much for stopping by and have a great week! 🙂

Is it Worth the Buy? Tarteist Lash Paint Mascara

Happy Friday, everyone! Hope you have all been enjoying the gorgeous weather! I have a ton of exciting posts planned for the summer and can’t wait to share them with you! Let’s kick things off with Tarte’s newest mascara, Tarteist Lash Paint.

As you all know, when reviewing a product I always like to consult the website to see what the product is marketed to do and the claims for this guy are kind of hilarious. Essentially, this is supposed to be a jet black lash paint that will give you 2700% more volume with their patented brush. (Is it just me or are brands just coming up with crazier and crazier numbers?) It is also vegan, dermatologist and ophthalmologist tested which is always a huge plus.

I absolutely love this mascara! It makes your lashes super thick and black without getting crazy clumpy or flaky. It wears beautifully and doesn’t give me any problems with smudging throughout the day. The packaging is really cute with the black and gold paint splatters and the wand is great for separation while still packing on the volume. It’s very similar to Benefit’s They’re Real–in terms of the formula and brush–but way better!

Processed with VSCO with p5 preset
I used one coat of Maybelline’s the Rocket Waterproof and then one coat of Tarteist. Processed with VSCO with p5 preset

There is a drawback though, I’m not sure if this is only a problem with mine or if they’re all like this but the wand doesn’t twist off like a normal mascara. Instead it pulls on and off and the stopper seems to come out with it. This is more confusing to me than anything else and it seems to me that the product may dry out faster as it never gets a super tight seal.

Overall, I am a huge fan of this mascara. At $28 it is a huge splurge for me but I get such amazing results that I feel it’s Worth the Buy!

Have you tried Tarteist? If so what did you think? I hope you all have a lovely day and I’ll talk to you next time!

$4 Bronzer??

Hello friends! Who’s excited for the weekend? You all know that I love being able to try out all different kinds of makeup, though I am always drawn to products that are on the more affordable side. I am a huge believer that you can find incredible products that make you look and feel awesome no matter how tight your budget is. Today we are venturing over to try the Cool Bronzer by Elf, (EyesLipsFace) a brand known for their huge selection of makeup and tools that allow you to find everything you need at an extreme value price.

I have experimented quite a bit with affordable makeup but one thing that I have a hard time with is bronzer. Benefit’s Hoola Bronzer is a staple in my routine and I haven’t found anything that can top it. Not gonna lie, the price of this product really is what lured me in. I figured that for $4 I couldn’t really go wrong and might as well try it. But I have to say, this is an amazing product.

You get four shades in here–all of which are matte–so you can blend them all together or use them separately. The packaging looks and feels very expensive and comes with huge mirror which is always great. The pigmentation is excellent and the colours are extremely buttery and smooth so they blend out beautifully. There can be some powder kick off if you are swirling your brush around, so I would advise more of a stippling motion for picking up the product.

My favourite way to use this is to take a small definition brush and blend all colours together to contour my cheeks, then dust them around my forehead and jawline with a large powder brush. But why stop there? I wanted to see how versatile this product could really be. I discovered that you can easily create a beautiful neutral eye look by using these guys as eyeshadows. An awesome bronzer and eyeshadow quad for $4?! You bet!

If you’re shopping on a tight budget and looking for great products, or you just can’t resist adding another bronzer to your collection, this guy is a must. I cannot get over the quality  and affordability of this product and I’ll be getting a ton of use out of it! What do you guys think of this bronzer? Let me know! Check out everything else the Elf has to offer here:

imPRESS Manicure

Hi everyone! Hope you’re all having a great Sunday! Having chipped and gross looking nail polish is one of my pet peeves. Not wanting to pay for acrylic or gel nails done at the salon, I started to look around at other options.

imPRESS Nails are press on nails that claim to apply in minutes and stay on until you chose to easily remove them. These seemed like a super fun idea to me and I figure that for $9.00 I couldn’t really go wrong. In each package, you get 24 pre-glued nails, a prep pad and a mini nail file.

The first time that I used these, I followed the instructions exactly. I pressed the nails on, and as promised the application was super quick and simple. The nails stayed on for about a day until they started to come off (things like washing your hands or touching your hair may make them come off sooner.) This method is great if you are going to a special event (prom, a wedding or a party) but not ideal if you’re looking for a long lasting alternative to nail polish.

To make them last longer I would recommend using nail glue. Just a few drops onto the nails allows them to stick on for over two weeks which is absolutely amazing. The removal process does take a bit more time with this option, but soaking your nails in acetone for a few minutes does the trick.

There are a ton of different patterns available, though they switch them out quite fast and don’t tend to bring old styles back. If you find a style you love I would definitely suggest picking up a few sets. They are harder to come by in Canada–I’ve only been able to find them at Walmart and their website doesn’t ship to Canada. 😦 But if you’re willing to hunt around a bit then it’s worth it!

Overall I’m extremely happy that I discovered imPRESS Nails and I hope that you guys will give them a shot if you’re getting annoyed with chipped nail polish. Be sure to let me know if you decide to try them! Have a great week everyone!

Is it Worth the Buy? Nyx Dream Catcher Palette Review

Hello friends! While I was in Florida, my sister and I went on a crazy shopping spree at Target and I’ve been testing out a ton of new makeup that I haven’t been able to find here. Today I’ll be talking about the Nyx Dream Catcher Palette. So many drugstore brands have been bringing out eye shadow palettes recently which is great, but I haven’t been a fan of any yet so I couldn’t wait to try this one.

Nyx was a brand that I was really looking forward to checking out and these palettes grabbed my attention right away! They have three different options, though all of them are very neutral. Each palette contains ten eye shadows, a double sided sponge applicator and a mirror underneath. I went for Stormy Skies because it seemed to have some interesting shades in it. This was $15 US and $18 CAN.

There are five matte shades and five satin to shimmery shades in this palette. They were fairly well pigmented overall, though some of the darker ones I was a bit dissapointed with. They work very well when applied wet if you’re looking to get a bit more colour payoff. I love that they included a matte black and a matte white because they’re such great staple colours to have and they build up really well. I was a little disappointed with some of the shades that you would use all over the lid as they tend to look the same once blended out. But the shimmery purple, the frosty blue and the matte peach are really nice and definitely made up for the other ones.

The packaging is quite nice and doesn’t fell cheap like drugstore palettes sometimes do, though I find the layout a bit weird and awkward. There isn’t a mirror on the lid it’s actually underneath the shadows once you slide them out. I honestly didn’t know there even was a mirror until I went on their website before writing this!

Overall, this is the best drugstore eye shadow palette that I’ve tried so far. The shadows weren’t too powdery or stiff, they were fairly well pigmented and they lasted really well. If you’re on a budget but still want a fun palette that you can get a ton of looks out of then I would definitely suggest giving it a look. This cute and budget friendly palette is certainly worth the buy!

What do you think of the Dream Catcher palettes? Are there any other products you’d like to see reviewed? Thank you so much for stopping by! ❤

Tarte Black Friday Set

Hello friends! On Black Friday, my sister and I got up super early and ran out to Sephora to try and grab some of the sets. There were definitely a few that I was super interested in but the one that grabbed my attention the most was this one from Tarte. It comes with the Amazonian Clay Blush in Fanciful, a Lights Camera Lashes mascara and the Maracuja Facial Oil, all travel sized.

I haven’t tried much from Tarte so I was really excited to see that I could try three things for just $13! I was very much intrigued by the blush because I’ve heard so many great things about them. It’s a totally matte pinky colour that I think would look great for spring and summer time. It does not quite reach the 12 hour point that it claims but it still lasts pretty well. It blended out very easily and gave me a nice and even amount of colour.

You also get the Lights, Camera, Lashes which is another I have never tried but was looking forward to. It gives really great volume and length to my lashes and didn’t flake or do anything funny during the day. It also layers up really well over a waterproof mascara–which you all know I need to hold a curl!

The Maracuja Oil is super interesting and I’m really excited that I have it. It’s a really unique kind of product because you can add it to any makeup products to make them have a creamier finish. If you’re someone that struggles with having super dry skin then you can add a drop to your foundation to change the finish. The way that I use it the most though is to just massage it into my skin after a long day when my skin feels like it needs a treat. I honestly think this travel size will last me forever!

Did you guys pick up any other sets on Black Friday? I was pretty disappointed with the Canadian selection. I hope you’re having a great day!
